Mortal Kombat is a 1992 fighting game developed and published by Midway. It is the first entry in the Mortal Kombat series and was subsequently released by Acclaim Entertainment for nearly every home platform at that time but never made it's way to the Atari Jaguar.
The game focuses on several characters of various intentions who enter a martial arts tournament with worldly consequences. It introduced many key aspects of the Mortal Kombat series, including the unique five-button control scheme and gory finishing moves called Fatalities.
This Atari Jaguar port has an exclusive playable character called Kasumi which is a nod to the Atari Jaguar fighting game called Kasumi Ninja.
The game combains a mash up of Arcade sprites and Super Nintendo sprites, the animated backgrounds were one of the last pieces to be completed for this build.
Currently the Computer AI hasn't been completed but two players can play verus each other using two controllers, Goro, Shang Tsung and Reptile are also still in development. A guide plus a list of known issues along with box art and controller overlays can be found in the zip file when you download the game file for yourself.
Personally I'm not a Mortal Kombat fan but I appreciate the game and the series for what is it and it's impressive that a game like this is making it's way to the Atari Jaguar, from the footage it looks and runs really well. I currently am unable to test it as I have a retail Atari Jagaur and have currently no way to play homebrew games but I'm sure the community will appreciate this project and if they haven't done so already check out the patreon to test it for yourself.
Check out the video above which shows the development plus full details on how you can become a tester, let us know your thoughts, is this something you're looking forward to seeing on the Atari Jagaur!
